Holes 4-6: Opps

These three holes are my nemesis, though I have love/hate relationship with hole 4, a short par-5 that can easily be reached in 2. Escaping these three without a double-bogey is always a good goal.

Hole 4: Nola

The big easy, but if you aren’t careful you can find yourself in a sticky situation. You can cut the corner and play to the right, into the fairway of the third hole, if you trust going over some trees blind onto the green.

Path to Par

Shot 1: Driver 250

  • Play to the right, aiming for either just left of the cart path or in the fairway of the Salt Mines.

  • Tee box is deceptive and not level, lose a foot and tee it up flatter and on the true line.

Shot 2: 7-I 150

  • Big false front on the green, with a long roll down.

  • Club up if need be - more room OTB than most holes, especially OTB and to the left.

Hole 5: Descent

A par three going steeply downhill. Sneaky OB to the left and back, and tons of room to the right. With the elevation change, it’s very easy to soar the green, so no need to hammer - let the hill do the work.

Path to Bogie

Shot 1: 4H, 195 (no tee)

  • Play to the center right, it is firm and will bounce forward and left.

  • Opens up to the right, to the left is jail and high risk of OB.

Shot 2: LW, 20

  • Green screams down and to the left.

Hole 6: S.O.D. - Son of a Ditch

A massive dog leg right, with OB all along the right hand side and a huge ditch at the knee of the dog. The smart play is to ignore the shape and just lay up to the top of the hill. The approach is deceptively short, once you clear the gulley.

Path to Bogie

Shot 1: Driver 230

  • Play to the center left, aiming for biggest visible tree in center.

  • Smart play is straight and easy swing, silly play is shape a draw and try to clear ditch.

Shot 2: GW 100

  • Deceptively short - just focus on good contact and no need to pure or swing from heels.

  • Better to miss right than left.

  • Massive false front on green, only flat part is center back.
